Some teens are just gentle souls.
They like to spend time in nature, reading, or with few trusted friends. They avoid crowds and shy away from loud people or settings. They enjoy their alone time, and their feelings often run deep.
This can prove tricky in today’s society, where extroversion and active engagement is rewarded. People may mistake their caution to initiate conversation as feelings of superiority or incapability. Yet, these young people merely need more time to warm up and join in. Rushing them only makes them feel flustered. Judging them only makes them feel misunderstood.
As the parent of a gentle teen, your job is to see them for who they are, and to gently support them in building a life that suits them. If you are yourself and extrovert, I would be happy to coach you on supporting your gentle teen. If you are an introvert that feels a bit overwhelmed by the task of guiding them in our fast-paced society, I would be happy to help your teen to find their their voice and their tribe.
