Teen girl friendships can be complicated.
BFF’s one day can become frenemies the next. Differing levels of maturity can cause old friends to outgrow each other over time. Competition for attention or boys can turn the best of buddies against each other.
It’s helpful for girls in middle school and high school to have someone they can turn to in order to sort through their feelings, and not just act them out. Sometimes, parents are not as available as they’d like to be, or certain how to best coach their daughter on how understand and respond to today’s complex social rules.
Part of my work with teen girls is to help them find their authentic voice. There is a difference between aggressive and assertive. There are times when it’s important to speak up, and times when it’s better to let a perceived slight roll off your shoulder. I work with teen girls to help them learn how to speak their truth with confidence and grace. I also help them to find friends that truly appreciate them for who they are.
