Mixed-cultural teens walk a middle-ground.
They don’t necessarily identify with one parent’s culture or the other. They often consider themselves a mixture, and try to hold onto the best of both. However, unless their friend group is well versed in diversity and can help them process their feelings, this can present a problem.
If I’m hispanic and don’t speak the language… If I’m bi-racial… If I’m Jewish, but non-practicing… do I belong to that culture? And if I’m a mixture, what do I take pride in? How do I identify myself? Who is my tribe? These questions can come up for kids during the identity formation phase of adolescence.
Parents who have chosen a partner from another culture may not have experienced these challenges of identity themselves. In these instances, it can be helpful to enlist the support of someone who understands adolescence and has direct experience of understanding and reconciling cultural differences.
