I find it fascinating how teens are constantly on their phones.
Multi-tasking, they walk down the street with their heads lowered, semi-aware of what’s going on around them. At lunch with friends, they carry on conversations with others who are not with them, interrupting a friend’s story to read a text.
Phones do provide a measure of convenience with the ability to stay in constant contact at all times. But I worry that kids are not really learning the fine art of conversation, and cultivating the ability of truly listening to one another. On top of that, how are they managing the stream of information coming to them while they are crossing a street or attempting to do homework?
These little hand-held devices are both a blessing and a curse. I’m going to suggest that it may be helpful to have a phone free zone at home, and that devices be charged outside the bedroom during sleep. During conversations with you, I suggest their devices be placed on silent and turned face down on the table. Healthy habits learned in the home will be practiced when they leave home. Please let me know if you’d like some support in this.
