For some young adults, the prospect of becoming independent may feel beyond reach.
A common theme that I have discovered holding young-adults back from moving forward with their lives is unfinished emotional work from childhood. Sometimes, life throws us a curve ball, and we are not prepared on how best to respond. Illnesses, the death of loved ones, divorce, change of jobs, change of residence, and change of schools can all contribute to upheaval within a family.
If a teenager is unable to develop the effective coping skills necessary to meet these challenges head-on, they may avoid maturing emotionally. They may resort to self-medication, or unhealthy relationships with food, sex, technology and peer drama to avoid their uncomfortable feelings. They may also create beliefs which can later become self-fulfilling prophesies, like “I’m not talented enough to pursue my passion of being a ______.” “I could never make it on my own.”
My job is to support young adults in exploring their current challenges, so that together we might understand them in new and more helpful ways. By helping identify and address unresolved emotional issues, I empower young clients to take next steps towards creating an independent, self-sustaining life for themselves.
